Descripción
This book is intended to inform a public interested in places in Madrid that were directly or indirectly connected with the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. The book is organized around three guided routes. The red route indicates memorial sites the three battalions of the XI IB passed on November 8, 1936 from Atocha Station to their positions assigned by the command that day. The yellow route traces different places frequented by the brigadiers on the rare occasion they were given leave from arduous warfare. The purple route mainly indicates sites that reveal the extent of international support for the Republican cause. Accompanying the book is a map displaying the three routes with summary information on each site. By recalling and honoring these historical sites, we hope to play a part in keeping alive and spreading the legacy of these “volunteers of freedom” who came to defend the Spanish Republic. This was the first struggle of resistance against aggressive fascism that ended up being defeated in 1945. About the Author Ken O’Keefe, M.A., language teacher, university educator, researcher, and American resident of Japan, has been visiting, investigating, and documenting historic sites of the Spanish civil war in Madrid for over 15 years. He is a member of the Friends of the International Brigades (AABI) and the Madrid Spanish civil war historical preservation group GEFREMA (Grupo de Estudios del Frente de Madrid). He has published essays and presented at conferences in both Madrid and Tokyo on the themes of historical memory of the Spanish Civil War.
